What actually is an erection?
Have you ever wondered what’s actually going on in your body when you get an erection? So did we – so allow us to explain! There are lots of different processes at play in the male body when a man gets an erection. To get hard, the penis needs to fill with blood, straighten and lift up, and all of this is triggered by a complex biochemical mechanism. This mechanism is set in motion by a signal from the brain in response to an erotic stimulus. This stimulus could be touch, a scent, an image, a sexual fantasy, or a whole host of other things; what counts as a sexual stimulus can vary wildly, as all men get turned on by different things. Once the erotic stimulus signal has been sent by the brain, the parasympathetic nervous system takes control and relaxes the muscles in the arterial walls of the penis. This allows the blood vessels to expand and the chambers inside the penis, the corpora cavernosa, to fill with blood. The body also needs to prevent the blood from flowing out of the veins so that the blood stays in the corpora cavernosa and keeps the penis hard and upright. While all this is going on, the testicles also lift upwards toward the stomach and intestines. In scientific terms, erections occur in four stages: the excitement phase, when the penis becomes erect; the plateau phase, when maximum arousal is reached; the orgasm phase, which is when ejaculation occurs; and finally the resolution phase, when the erection fades.
But it’s not just the processes going on in your body that help you achieve and maintain an erection. Your actions can make a huge difference, too.
How you can make a difference
If you’re struggling with your erections, there are many things you can try before reaching for drugs. Often, just a few changes in your day-to-day life can boost your erections: Making changes to your diet, exercise regime, and stress levels can all help. Erection problems can even be caused by certain medications. In many cases, men see an improvement just by making some basic lifestyle changes and without resorting to erection-enhancing drugs.
The impact of a healthy diet: A diet that is high in fat and sugar can lead to obesity and high cholesterol, as well as increasing your risk of diseases such as diabetes and arteriosclerosis – both of which are potential causes of impotence. If you don’t eat healthily, you could be contributing to your erection issues, so replace highly processed options with fresh, whole foods instead. Some foods are also thought to have a positive effect on erectile health. Usually, these foods contain high levels of antioxidants: Think blackberries, apples, tomatoes, nuts, citrus fruits, and potatoes. Staying hydrated is also crucial if you want to enhance your erections.
How exercise enhances your erections: Regular exercise is important not only for your overall health, but for your erectile health, too. Experts believe that endurance sports like jogging, or strength training that works the muscles in the thighs, are most effective at boosting erections. Men who have issues with their erections may also benefit from pelvic floor training. To strengthen your pelvic floor, squeeze your pelvic floor muscles for 10 seconds at a time and then relax again. This exercise should be done daily, and you can do it sitting, standing, or lying down – so any place, any time. Check out this article to learn more about pelvic floor training for men.
Nicotine and other medications/drugs: Smoking can clog up your arteries – including those in your penis – so nicotine consumption can lead to erection issues. There’s still hope if you’re an ex-smoker: Studies have shown that erectile function can improve in men who have given up the habit. Of course, it’s better for your health in general if you don’t consume nicotine at all. Other drugs and medications can also hinder your ability to get an erection, so our advice is to refrain from taking those, too. If you need to take regular medication for another health issue, it might be a good idea to ask your physician if erectile dysfunction is a potential side effect.
Stress and mental health: You might also encounter erection issues if you’re under severe stress or struggling with your mental health. Faced with these challenges, it has been scientifically proven that your libido will decline and your erectile function will be noticeably reduced. Activity levels in the areas of the brain that are responsible for sexual arousal are significantly reduced during periods of stress. And the fact that you can’t get or maintain an erection is likely to stress you out even more, creating a vicious cycle that can be hard to break. It’s a good idea to talk about why you’re struggling with stress and your mental health. Having an understanding partner on your side and reducing your stress levels generally can also help.

Sometimes, all you need is the right kind of support
Does regular masturbation help? Regular masturbation certainly won’t do any harm, as long as you actually feel like you’re enjoying the experience rather than forcing yourself to do it. It could also help to boost your self-esteem and it’s a great way to get to know your own body and familiarize yourself with your erectile function.
