What is in the personal lubricants we use in our delicate intimate area? Which ingredients really benefit our intimate area, and what do you need to watch out for in personal lubricants? With the vast array of personal lubricants on the market, it can be difficult to keep track. pjur love is here to help you get to the bottom of what ingredients lubricants contain and what you need to look out for.

Because it’s about your intimate area…

Take care our your mucous membranes in our intimate area and of the ingredients in personal lubricant. Whilst we might test a face cream out to see if our skin reacts to it, we find it difficult to do the same when it comes to our intimate area. All the more reason, then, to pay attention to the ingredients in the products we use in our intimate area, because it’s as important to us as it is to you:

  • Because personal lubricants enter your body
  • Because the ingredients in the products you use really make a difference
  • Because highly compatible ingredients are important and also better

Personal lubricants and their ingredients

Water-based personal lubricant

A water-based personal lubricant consists primarily of water. However, it will usually also contain glycerin and an expanding agent or thickening agent. Glycerin is a sugar alcohol that is used in cosmetic products to hydrate the skin and protect against moisture loss and irritation. Water-based personal lubricants generally also need to contain preservatives in order to guarantee a long shelf life.

Here at pjur, however, we have a number of water-based personal lubricants that manage without preservatives. These include pjur WOMAN Nude, pjur WOMAN Vegan and pjur med SENSITIVE. We have deliberately formulated these products without preservatives to allow us to offer water-based personal lubricants that are suitable even for those with particularly sensitive skin.

Silicone-based personal lubricants

Silicone-based personal lubricants, on the other hand, primarily contain silicone. This is an ingredient that is used very often in the cosmetics industry. However, silicone is not always said to have purely positive properties. Yet high-quality silicones like those used in our pjur products also have a number of benefits:

  • Silicone has a very long shelf life in products and is also not sensitive to fluctuations in temperature.
  • Since silicone molecules are larger than the pores in our skin, they are not absorbed by the skin. Instead, they stay on the surface, forming a protective film. As a result, our silicone-based personal lubricants provide long-lasting lubrication.
  • Despite the protective film that forms, the skin is able to breathe underneath.
  • Our skin tolerates silicones very well. They generally do not cause any allergies or irritation.
  • Silicone-based personal lubricants do not need to have preservatives added to them.

Personal lubricants: combination of water and silicone

Personal lubricants made from a combination of water and silicone – so-called hybrid personal lubricants – are also available, as well as oil-based lubricants. Hybrid personal lubricants also have a high water content, but they contain a small amount of silicone as well. Oil-based personal lubricants are produced using oil as the base. Although they form a long-lasting lubricating film, they also leave a film of oil on the skin. What’s more, oil-based personal lubricants cannot be used with latex condoms and shouldn’t be used with sex toys, either. There is also the risk of infection if they are used vaginally. That’s why we don’t include any oil-based personal lubricants in our range here at pjur.

What to look out for with personal lubricants

The best way is to choose selected ingredients and certified personal lubricants from pjur, because we:

  • guarantee a personal lubricant quality with a uniform consistency that is perfectly tailored to your needs
  • provide you with a reliable, sensual product for all sexual practices (we deliver on our promises and always offer the right lubricating properties)
  • give you peace of mind, leaving you free to enjoy sensual experiences and not worry about ingredients

A woman’s intimate area usually has a pH of 4.0 to 4.5. It is therefore an acidic environment, designed to protect against bacteria. By using care products that don’t have the same pH as a woman’s intimate area, women run the risk of inflammation down there, for example. So it’s important to be aware of the pH when choosing a personal lubricant. Ideally, choose a product with a pH that matches that of a woman’s intimate area.

Fragrance substances and flavourings?! Better not!

A large number of personal lubricants contain fragrance substances and flavourings, yet many people are sensitive to ingredients like these. If you’re one of them, you should definitely make sure your personal lubricant does not contain any flavourings or fragrances. At pjur, we have made a conscious decision to do away with fragrances and flavourings altogether in all our personal lubricants.

When buying a personal lubricant, you should always make sure it is dermatologically tested. That way, you can be safe in the knowledge you are using a high-quality product. The skin compatibility of all our personal lubricants has been dermatologically tested.

Additives in personal lubricants

Hyaluron - additives in personal lubricants

There is a great deal of variety in the different personal lubricants available. And that’s partly down to the fact that additives are increasingly being used to give lubricants additional positive properties. The following prized additives are found in some pjur lubricants, for example:

Hyaluron: Hyaluron will be an ingredient familiar from many cosmetics. In pjur lubricants, it forms small cushions of water, thus helping to ensure a particularly good lubricant effect. It also has regenerative and moisturising properties. Hyaluron is found in our pjur analyse me! Moisturising, for example.

Jojoba - additives in personal lubricants

Jojoba: When jojoba is used in a personal lubricant, it has a calming and nourishing effect on our sensitive mucous membranes. It also leaves the skin feeling soft and smooth. Our pjur BACK DOOR Relaxing contains jojoba, for example.

Aloe Vera: Aloe vera is another much-loved ingredient in the cosmetics industry and is found in a lot of products. It is recommended for tissue repair as aloe vera promotes cell regeneration. It is also used as a moisturiser. Aloe vera is found in our pjur WOMAN Aloe, for example.

Aloe Vera - additives in personal lubricants

In addition to these additives, you will also find ginkgo, menthol and even caffeine in our products. Like the ingredients above, these are also intended to have a specific effect. But whatever the substances we use for our pjur lubricants, it’s important to us that they are all natural or nature-identical ingredients, without exception.

That isn’t true of all manufacturers, though – and not all additives are created equal. Which is why you should always read up about the effects of each of the additives in your personal lubricants. Never underestimate what’s in them – especially as they are used in the delicate intimate area!
