How common is premature ejaculation?
If you have an issue with climaxing too soon during sex, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that around four percent of men reach orgasm soon after penetration, or even before that point. In fact, alongside erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation is the most common sexual disorder that men face. A physician will only diagnose premature ejaculation (or “Ejaculatio praecox”) if the affected person experiences early ejaculation as a problem. Experts have suggested a number of potential causes for premature ejaculation: It may be driven by biological factors, such as oversensitivity in the penis, or by psychological factors, such as performance anxiety, or by a combination of both. In this blog post, we took a closer look at all of the potential causes of premature ejaculation.
Climaxing too soon during sex is a problem that can arise at any point in a man’s life. For some men, it’s a lifelong problem, while for others, it only happens occasionally and usually later in life. The picture can look very different for different men. But luckily, no matter how premature ejaculation affects you, there are lots of potential solutions that can help you achieve satisfying sex and put performance anxiety to bed for good.

How to get your sexual endurance back
When it comes to sexual endurance, the question of “how long is long enough” is, of course, very subjective – and your answer will depend on the expectations you and your partner have. If you think that you don’t last long enough during sex, these fixes might help you get your endurance back:
- Rule out any physical causes first: If you think that you’re suffering from premature ejaculation, a urologist should be your first port of call. A urologist will be able to check for physical causes and recommend a treatment for you, which will usually be comprised of a combination of therapies that address the problem in different ways. Alongside medication, behavioral therapies and psychological interventions can also help. Whatever the outcome, checking in with a specialist will give you clarity as to whether your problems with premature ejaculation are rooted in a physical cause. If they aren’t, your doctor will be able to propose other solutions.
- Are you taking any medication that could cause premature ejaculation? If you’re taking any regular medication, check whether it could be the cause of your premature ejaculation problem. Check the patient information leaflet or ask your doctor for more information. Sometimes, medication can be the cause of these kinds of issues.
- Is the problem severe enough for you to consider taking medication to help you last during sex? Like almost any other physical issue, there are medications that will help prevent you from climaxing too soon. Your doctor can prescribe a type of drug known as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), which may help to lengthen the time it takes for you to ejaculate. However, we’d advise keeping drugs as a last resort, because there are plenty of other things you can try first to increase your sexual endurance.
- Have you tried the start-stop method? The start-stop method, also known as edging, involves stimulating the penis until right before ejaculation occurs, then pausing briefly before resuming once the intensity of the man’s arousal has dropped off a little. You can use this technique for as long as you want, either during sex with a partner or alone. Over time and with regular practice, the start-stop method should help you become more aware of your level of arousal, which in turn will enable you to control your orgasms.
- What about the squeeze technique? The squeeze technique works in a similar way: Just before ejaculation, the man squeezes the tip of the penis until the urge to climax has passed. Your partner can also do this for you. After a few seconds, you can resume sex or stimulation – then it’s just a case of repeating until you finally want to climax. This technique can also help you to control your ejaculations more effectively.
- Train your pelvic muscles! Yes, you read that right: Pelvic floor training isn’t just for women who’ve recently given birth. Targeting the pelvic floor muscles strengthens the sphincter and the muscle that controls the flow of urine, both of which are involved in the process of ejaculation. And strengthening these muscles can help to prevent premature ejaculation. Here’s how to do it: Sit in a relaxed position on a chair. Squeeze and release your sphincter and urinary muscles 20 to 40 times in a row. Hold the squeeze for two to three seconds each time. You can gradually increase the number of reps as your muscles get stronger. If you do this exercise multiple times a day, you’ll be able to strengthen your muscles, which could help to prevent premature ejaculation.
- Use pjur products: Our range includes a number of products that could help prevent premature ejaculation. Our pjur superhero range has been specially designed to help you last longer. At the end of 2024, our superhero line-up of pjur superhero Performance Spray, pjur superhero Strong Spray (a slightly stronger version of the original), and pjur superhero Delay Serum was extended with the launch of our strongest delay spray yet – pjur superhero Ultimate Spray. With an active complex of six key ingredients, pjur superhero Ultimate noticeably increases your sexual endurance, reducing oversensitivity and making you stronger than ever! Many other sprays and serums of this type contain anesthetics like lidocaine and benzocaine. These substances take a long time to work, and they can also numb the genitals of both partners – which isn’t really a viable option considering that many women already struggle with getting sufficient stimulation during sex. It’s a much better idea to use pjur products to get your endurance back where you want it to be.
